Beyond AI: 8 Specialised Australian Degrees Worth Exploring

Posted by CRICOS Guides Editorial Team Oct. 3, 2026

Beyond AI

Biomedical instrumentation, energy-market analysis and immersive environments are three very different reasons to study technology. Australia’s October 2026 CRICOS course dataset contains degree options addressing all three, alongside robotics, cybersecurity, bioinformatics and geospatial science.

CRICOS.net selected eight programmes whose specialisations can be explained through official provider information. They include an associate degree, bachelor-level qualifications and coursework master’s degrees. The purpose is to compare concrete study options beyond qualifications explicitly centred on artificial intelligence.

“Beyond AI” does not mean an AI-free curriculum. Some selected programmes use machine learning or intelligent systems within another discipline. The distinction is the organising subject: biological data, physical machines, secure networks, energy decisions, spatial information or immersive experiences.

This is an editorial selection, not a ranking of popularity, educational quality or graduate prospects.

Eight Degrees Compared: Listed Tuition and Duration

The amounts below reproduce the Tuition Fee field in the October 2026 CRICOS snapshot, in Australian dollars. They are course-level database values, not annual fees, current provider quotes or personalised offers.

Duration is the exported Duration (Weeks) value. It should not be interpreted as teaching weeks or a guaranteed individual completion schedule.

All eight records have Expired = No in the October snapshot. That does not establish that every intake is open or that every applicant is eligible.

The table is a discovery tool, not a cheapest-to-best ranking. Different qualification levels, durations and admission pathways make a simple price comparison insufficient.

1. Robotics: Connecting Software to Physical Machines

Flinders University — Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics) (Honours)Provider code: 00114A · Course code: 083449B

Robotics adds physical constraints to computing. A system must interact with sensors, electronics and mechanical components, rather than produce an answer solely on a screen.

Flinders’ official robotics programme describes the integration of mechanical components, electronics and software, with study involving robotics, control systems and sensor integration.

This is a direction to investigate if building and controlling a machine interests you more than concentrating on software models alone. The four-year undergraduate structure is also a different starting point from the postgraduate programmes elsewhere in this selection.

Check the mathematics prerequisites early. Flinders normally requires specified senior-secondary mathematics or an equivalent qualification and identifies physics as assumed knowledge. Interest in robots should be accompanied by a willingness to work through their engineering foundations.

2. Cybersecurity: Studying How Systems Fail and How to Protect Them

University of New England — Master of CybersecurityProvider code: 00003G · Course code: 113711G

Cybersecurity focuses on protecting data, networks and systems. It offers a different set of questions from building an AI application: how is information protected, where are vulnerabilities, and how should an organisation manage security risk?

UNE’s official course structure lists subjects including Cryptography, Ethical Hacking, Cloud Security and Intrusion Detection. The programme also includes research-thesis or industry-project routes.

Those subjects are not a promise that every student takes the same combination. UNE publishes different study rules and advanced-standing arrangements, so applicants should inspect the structure applicable to their admission pathway.

The October record lists 80 weeks. Treat that as registered duration, then ask how prior study, credit and the selected route affect the actual programme you would complete.

3. Bioinformatics: Using Computing to Investigate Biology

Monash University — Master of BioinformaticsProvider code: 00008C · Course code: 116951M

Bioinformatics brings biological questions into computational analysis. Its datasets may concern genomes, proteins or other biological measurements, rather than customer transactions or general-purpose text.

Monash’s Master of Bioinformatics describes computational biology, statistical modelling and analysis of large biological datasets. Examples include decoding genomes and modelling protein structures. Students can pursue coursework or research streams, with a supervised project in the research stream.

This is worth examining if your interest lies at the intersection of biology, statistics and programming. It is a subject-specific application of computational methods, rather than simply a renamed general IT qualification.

AI and machine learning appear within the provider’s description. That supports the article’s distinction: the alternative is a biological focus for technology study, not the removal of AI from the syllabus.

4. Biomedical Engineering: Technology Inside Healthcare Equipment

TAFE SA — Associate Degree in Biomedical EngineeringProvider code: 00092B · Course code: 092136M

Biomedical engineering concerns the relationship between engineering and healthcare. TAFE SA’s option gives this selection a different qualification level and a focus on equipment and instrumentation.

The official international course page lists digital electronics, anatomy and physiology for biomedical technologists, biomedical instrumentation and microcontroller programming. Its description addresses activities such as testing and fault-finding biomedical equipment.

This may interest students who want to understand medical technology as hardware and systems, rather than focus primarily on analysing biological datasets.

The provider separately lists duration including holidays and teaching duration. That distinction matters: the CSV’s 104 weeks should not be described as 104 weeks of classroom teaching.

It is an associate degree, not an interchangeable substitute for a bachelor honours degree. Compare the award, curriculum and any further-study arrangements before choosing a pathway.

5. Energy Systems: Combining Engineering, Economics and Policy

University of Melbourne — Master of Energy SystemsProvider code: 00116K · Course code: 075124A

An energy decision can involve technical performance, financing, market conditions and policy at the same time. Studying only one of those dimensions may leave important questions unanswered.

Melbourne’s Master of Energy Systems explicitly combines technical, commercial and policy analysis. The university describes cross-disciplinary study of technological, economic and financial issues, alongside an industry project.

This makes the programme worth investigating for someone interested in how energy systems are assessed and implemented, rather than solely in designing one component. The provider identifies relevant backgrounds including engineering, science, business, finance and economics; applicants still need to check the full entry criteria.

The snapshot lists 78 weeks and tuition of A$103,466. Do not compare that amount directly with a four-year bachelor’s figure as though the programmes have equivalent scope or admission requirements.

6. Geospatial Science: Making Location Part of the Analysis

Location changes the meaning of data. Geospatial study examines where something happens, how places relate and what spatial patterns can reveal.

Flinders: An Undergraduate Foundation

Bachelor of Geospatial Information SystemsProvider code: 00114A · Course code: 110618F

Flinders’ programme page describes capturing and analysing geographic data using drones, satellites and mapping software, with applications including urban growth and environmental challenges.

It offers an undergraduate direction for students interested in combining computing with mapping, observation and spatial analysis.

Curtin: Postgraduate Geospatial Intelligence

Master of Geospatial IntelligenceProvider code: 00301J · Course code: 0100574

Curtin’s official description covers remote sensing, geographic information systems, dataset integration, location-allocation and scripting to automate tasks. It also describes a substantial research project.

The useful comparison is undergraduate foundation versus postgraduate specialisation. These two programmes should not be treated as competing offers for every applicant: qualification level and entry requirements come first.

For curriculum comparisons, look at how much time each programme gives to data capture, programming, spatial modelling and research.

7. Immersive Technologies: Designing Experiences People Enter

UNSW — Master of Simulation and Immersive TechnologiesProvider code: 00098G · Course code: 099986A

Immersive technology shifts attention from analysing information to designing environments and experiences. That creates questions about interaction, narrative and how people understand a simulated setting.

UNSW’s official programme lists subjects addressing immersion, human dimensions and narrative. Elective options include Designing Immersion with Game Engines and 3D Visualisation Studio.

This may interest applicants drawn to the combination of design and technology. It should not be mistaken for a conventional games-programming degree or an engineering qualification solely because it uses technical platforms.

The live provider page lists a 1.7-year duration with intake-dependent calendar information, while the October CSV records 104 weeks. Both should retain their stated basis. Ask UNSW for the current plan applicable to your intended intake rather than converting the snapshot into a personal timetable.

What Changed in October?

None of the eight selected provider-course keys was newly appearing in October. Seven records were unchanged across all exported fields.

The UNSW Master of Simulation and Immersive Technologies recorded two revisions:

FieldSeptemberOctoberChange
Tuition FeeA$70,500A$74,000+A$3,500
Estimated Total Course CostA$72,000A$75,500+A$3,500

Its exported duration remained 104 weeks and Expired remained No.

These are database revisions. The comparison does not establish their cause or the amount payable by a particular student. This article is primarily a discovery selection based on October records, rather than a list of newly launched programmes.

For qualifications explicitly centred on AI, see CRICOS.net’s separate AI-course comparison.

How to Compare These Options

Start with the subject you want to investigate, then test whether the programme provides an appropriate route.

  1. Read the curriculum. Look for named units, projects and assessment approaches. A title alone cannot show the balance between programming, laboratory work, design, mathematics and research.
  2. Check the qualification level. An associate degree, bachelor honours degree and coursework master’s serve different educational stages.
  3. Verify admission requirements. Inspect prerequisite subjects, relevant prior qualifications, academic thresholds and English-language requirements.
  4. Confirm location and delivery. Check the campus and mode for the specific course and intake. Do not assume that every advertised online option suits your intended circumstances.
  5. Establish the fee basis. Ask whether a provider amount is annual, per study load or for the complete programme. Confirm non-tuition charges separately.
  6. Request the applicable study plan. Registered weeks do not account for every individual credit decision or scheduling arrangement.
  7. Check availability before applying. Expired = No in a snapshot is not confirmation of an available place.

Use the official live CRICOS register alongside provider documentation and your individual offer.
